On Saturday morning, October 8, a large-scale fire broke out on the railway line on the Crimean bridge across the Kerch Strait, which was preceded by an explosion. Fuel tanks were burning, and part of the road bridge collapsed into the water.
The Crimean bridge is an illegally built transport crossing from the Russian Federation to occupied Crimea through the Kerch Strait. It consists of railway and road parts. The length of the Crimean bridge is 18.1 km.
Reportedly, an explosion occurred at about 6 am on the Crimean bridge in Kerch. A massive column of black smoke rose into the sky. A part of the road bridge collapsed into the water. Significant discoloration and deformation of the railway bridge spans were visible on satellite images and videos. The railway part of the bridge has two parallel tracks. A fuel tanker was on fire on the railway branch of the bridge, and a freight train was engulfed in flames. Russia has reportedly resumed work on the section that does not contain the burned tankers.
Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the President of Ukraine, suggested that this could be an escalation of the dispute between Russian special services and private armies like Wagner's on the one hand and the General Staff and the Ministry of Defense on the other. However, The New York Times quoted a senior Ukrainian official saying that Ukraine was responsible for the attack. The official added that the explosion was organized by the Ukrainian special services, which used a bomb loaded into a truck being transported across the bridge. He added that Ukraine was banned from commenting on the explosion. The Ukrainian side states that any involvement of the Ukrainian special services in certain events will be commented on after the final victory of Ukraine in the war.
