Kazakhstan has announced significant upgrades to the Caspian Sea ports of Aktau and Kuryk, aiming to create a regional logistics hub that will benefit the Middle Corridor. These investments, primarily funded by private capital, are part of the country's broader plan for developing maritime infrastructure from 2024 to 2028.

In Aktau, the plan includes constructing a new container hub, supported by Chinese investments from the Lianyungang Port Group. The project, valued at approximately USD 3.7 billion, will enhance Aktau's role as a crucial hub for the Middle Corridor. This development will facilitate smoother and more extensive cargo handling.

Kuryk port will undergo dredging work to transform into a logistics hub like Aktau. It is also developing a reloading terminal capable of handling an additional three million tons of cargo annually. Moreover, a joint venture between AD Ports and Semurg Invest is constructing a new grain terminal to aid grain transportation. Kuryk will become a green energy transport hub through an agreement with Hyrasia One and Semurg Invest, aiming to transport hydrogen from Hyrasia One's Kazakh plant to Europe and other markets via the Middle Corridor.

These upgrades aim to increase the seaport and freight transport capacity, targeting 30 million tons per year by 2028 and tripling container handling volumes. This will also help double the transit rail freight capacity and reduce cargo processing times.
