photo: Warsaw Public Transport/ZTM and Budimex Have Signed a Contract to Extend the Wilanów Tram Line
As part of the recapitalisation plan of Tramaje Warszawskie, the Wilanów tram line will be extended by 8 km with the construction of four intersections towards Warsaw's central district of Śródmieście. Apart from local funding, the tram route, the total cost of which is estimated at EUR 252.9 million (PLN 1.19 billion), will receive a European co-financing of EUR 117.97 million (PLN 555 million).
In general, the new route to Wilanów will have two branches and start at the junction of Puławska and Goworka Streets (with the reconstruction of the existing tram route section from Rakowiecka Street to Plac Unii Lubelskiej), cross Goworka and Spacerowa Streets, and then continue along Belwederska and Sobieskiego Streets to Miasteczko Wilanów. The terminus of the two-way tram will be located at the junction of Rzeczypospolitej and Branicki Streets.
It is planned to have a total of 31 tram stops with a green light signal along the route (i.e. trams will not have to wait for the green light at intersections). This route will significantly reduce the travel time for the residents of Wilanów, who commute to downtown Warsaw, as the journey to the Centrum A metro station on the M1 line will take only about 30 minutes!
Construction is expected to start within five months, after which Budimex will have 22 months to build the track in the basic scope from Puławska Street to the junction with Św. Bonifacego Street. Alternatively, Tramwaje Warszawskie may decide to build the entire route to Wilanów to the junction with Branickiego Street. The contractor would have a total of 21 months to construct this route version.
