JSC Ukrainian Railways has completed the reconstruction of two sections of Line 102, which connects Khyrov in the Lviv region to Poland.

The project, which took less than a year to complete, is expected to improve Ukraine's security, export potential, and population mobility, while providing Poland with the shortest route between border cities. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers is currently awaiting approval to open two border crossings with Poland and launch a passenger train on the European gauge operated by Polish Railways.

Approximately 68.3 km of tracks were overhauled in the project, including wide gauge, European standard gauge, and combined gauge sections. Additionally, the project involved the repair of ten bridges, four-passenger platforms, nine buildings, and structures for technological purposes, as well as railway stations in Khyriv, Nyzhankovychi, and Starzhava. This reconstruction allows the potential resumption of trains that ceased operations in 1994 and 2010.

The updated sections will significantly reduce travel distance between certain Polish towns, with the distance from Kroscienko to Przemyśl being reduced fivefold. Moreover, the introduction of traffic through the Ukrainian Khyriv station will provide the fastest rail connection between several counties of the Polish Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The project is part of a series of infrastructure initiatives agreed upon by the heads of the Ministries of Infrastructure of Ukraine and Poland during a meeting in Krasiczyn, Poland, in February 2022.
