Ukrainian Railways Achieves Remarkable Track Renewal in 2023, Surpassing Previous Year's Performance

Owing to various types of repairs, in 2023 Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) renewed 1308.3 km of tracks, showing 19.6% better results compared to 2022. This year, the carrier has set a goal to renew 1197.5 km of tracks.

The World Bank project provided Ukrainian Railways with 46 pieces of machinery and equipment for infrastructure rehabilitation worth USD 2.76 million, marking the first financial project in the history of Ukrzaliznytsia implemented jointly with the World Bank. The equipment received includes 1 air compressor, 3 car lifts, 4 forklifts, 4 pneumatic excavators, 9 hydraulic jacks, 20 drilling rigs on a magnetic stand, and other equipment that will contribute to the quality and rapid restoration of critical railway infrastructure.

The Ukrainian national carrier is expected to receive additional equipment worth USD 4.6 million by the end of August this year.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, last year, 812.7 km of track was restored by medium repair, which was 30% more than in 2022. Moreover. 690 sets of turnouts were restored by medium repair, while 284 sets of turnouts were restored by overhaul.

"In 2023, almost 8 thousand kilometers of the contact network on the main tracks of stations and crossings were repaired. We replaced 217 km of worn-out contact wire, 141 km of corroded carrier cable, 697 defective and old-type overhead line supports, 12.2 thousand outdated contact suspension insulators with polymeric ones, 69 sectional insulators, and modernized 173 overhead switches. At the traction substations, 18 transformers were overhauled, and 31 current and voltage transformers were replaced," stated Ukrainian Railways.
