Ukrainian drones disrupted a strategic railway network in Russia’s Voronezh region, forcing a temporary halt to rail traffic on a key corridor supplying the Donbas.
On Tuesday morning, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles struck railway infrastructure in the Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine. The attack caused a temporary suspension of train services and required emergency repair crews to be deployed to damaged sections of track, Business Insider reported, citing Reuters.
Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev confirmed that an unspecified piece of railway infrastructure was targeted. While Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed that 129 drones were intercepted overnight across the country, at least one drone struck the track infrastructure in this strategically important region.
Russian officials stated that the strike caused no casualties, resulted in limited damage to railway infrastructure and power systems, and led to a temporary suspension of train services, which are now being gradually restored.

Why Voronezh Matters Militarily
The Voronezh region serves as a critical logistics artery for Russian forces operating in eastern Ukraine. Railway hubs, such as Liski, which were previously targeted in earlier attacks, handle the movement of heavy equipment, ammunition, and fuel toward the Donbas. "The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of Russia’s rear areas. Attacks on railways have a direct impact on the speed of resupplying frontline forces," military analysts note.
The Logistics Battles Between Russia and Ukraine
The latest strike is not an isolated incident. Ukraine has increasingly targeted railway signalling systems, fuel depots near major stations, and locomotive depots, aiming to disable assets that Russia struggles to replace quickly. In response, Russian authorities have tightened security measures and deployed electronic warfare systems along rail corridors. However, the dense railway network near the border remains a relatively accessible target for drones.

We continue to closely monitor developments in Ukraine. Since the summer, drone attacks on rail infrastructure have intensified on both sides of the war. For Ukraine, rail transport became a lifeline following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022, often the only reliable connection across the country and abroad. That perception of railways as safe havens no longer fully applies.
Russian Drone Attacks Target Civilian Infrastructure
Russian drone strikes have also increasingly hit Ukraine’s railway network. In an earlier interview with Reuters, Ukrzaliznytsia CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said that although Russia targets major transport nodes, Ukraine’s railway system has so far remained resilient. According to Pertsovskyi, the primary objective of Russian attacks is not military logistics. "Their primary goal is to sow panic among passengers and, secondarily, to hit the economy. These are attacks on civilian infrastructure carried out knowingly," he said, adding that military transport has not been affected so far.
