The inconsistency in rail gauges between Ukraine and Poland causes a prominent obstacle to efficient railway operation. Therefore, this month, the two countries will sign an agreement to extend the standard gauge to Kyiv.
It is due to the difference in gauge, which is the main and significant narrowing between the countries. However, Tadeusz Syryjczyk, partner at Transport Consultants Group, noted that the gauge difference is "not the most time-consuming to overcome", emphasizing that the customs procedures, power systems and the operator's territorial limitations make the current obstacles.

It is known that shortly after the CER amended the TEN-T proposal to extend four corridors to Moldova and Ukraine, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank began preparing a feasibility study for the expansion of the corridors to the two countries. Prior to that, the main proposals concerned the extension of the broad gauge from Ukraine to Poland and Europe.
