RB Rail AS has revealed that three international contenders have advanced to the second phase of the Rail Baltica energy subsystem design and construction procurement.

The project, considered the largest railway cross-border electrification effort in Europe, will span 870 km of mainlines from Tallinn to the Lithuania-Poland border and from Kaunas to Vilnius. Qualified candidates include COBELEC Rail Baltica from Spain, ALSTOM-BMGS-GE-Torpol from Latvia, France, and Poland, and STC Baltic Electrification from France, Germany, and Latvia.

The second stage of the tender is set to start in the upcoming months, with the contract expected to be signed by the end of 2023. Previously, the association of DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH, IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, S.A.U., and Italferr S.p.A. was awarded the engineering service for the project. Key components of the energy subsystem will consist of high voltage connection points, traction power substations, overhead contact systems, and an energy control command system.

The European Union will contribute up to 85% of the total eligible costs through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), while Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will provide the remaining financing. The project aims to improve railway connectivity and efficiency throughout the Baltic region, enhancing trade and transportation opportunities for the countries involved.
