The Spanish government has decided to give 24.2 billion euros to modernize the railway infrastructure, as confirmed by Minister of Transport and Mobility Raquel Sánchez. In the medium term, according to Sánchez, more efforts will be needed on cross-border rail transport with Portugal and France and links to ports and logistical facilities.

The Spanish Ministry will launch the Mercancías 30 initiative, which aims to increase the share of rail freight in the entire transport sector.

The Cercanías 25 plan will get published in 2022. The proposal will include digitization steps and improve the whole passenger experience.

For example, the Bobadilla-Algeciras and Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunto sections are to be electrified and adapted for the 750-meter trains.
