The SM42-6Dn hydrogen locomotive produced by PESA for Orlen Koltrans won the design award, called the ‘‘Dobry Wzór 2021‘‘, awarded in a competition organized by the Polish Institute of Industrial Design. The designers of the locomotive Bartosz Piotrowski (exterior body) and Krzysztof Nogowski (driver's cabin) also received the award from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The modernization of the SM42 was a challenge for both the construction team and the PESA designers. The locomotive has got not only an innovative hydrogen engine but also a modern look, with a minimalist design that refers to current trends.

The original form of the SM42 (only the supporting structure/frame and part of the running gear remained) was completely changed - the cabin was moved to the center of the vehicle and the space obtained by this procedure was allocated to arrange additional technical equipment, including fuel cells and hydrogen tanks.

The driver's cab is two-way, has a bathroom and air conditioning. In terms of ergonomics, the task was to guarantee the best possible view for the driver within the limits of the contour (available space).

The hydrogen shunting locomotive was initially presented at the International Railway Fair TRAKO 2021 in September this year. The vehicle is currently in the trial phase and will be put into operation at the PKN Orlen refinery in Płock in the autumn of 2022.
