Rete Ferroviaria Italiana has ventured a € 2.77 billion tender to design and build a state-wide ETCS Level 2 system. The deadline for receiving tenders or requests to participate is February 2022, and tenders will be opened on 1 March 2022. registration is possible until March
This tender will be in addition to the € 500 million tenders in August to equip some 700 km of railway lines in Sicily, Lazio, Abruzzo, Tuscany, and Umbria.
FS Italiane states that ERTMS will get deployed on Trenitalia's rolling stock through the EIB's non-repayable fund and the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) of more than EUR 6 million. EUR 4 million from the EIB will install ERTMS on 76 regional hybrid trains. The CDP will provide EUR 2.2 million to get set up to upgrade the system on 12 high-speed transnational and cross-border trains between Italy, Switzerland, and Germany (seven ETR 610 trains) and domestic and five ETR 470 trains to get put into service in Greece. High-speed trains will experience technical advancements thanks to the installation of the ERTMS Baseline 3 system.
The Italian railway infrastructure operator intends to implement ERTMS on 3,400 km of lines by 2026. In 2022-2024, RFI will install digital technology on 1,377 km of lines and in 2025-2026 on another 2,023 km. These plans align with the commitments and planning of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNNR).
The strategic direction of RFI is to accelerate the deployment of ETCS Level 2 across its network by 2036, in line with ongoing technological investments in the refurbishment of digital station equipment and to replace existing security systems with fully digital interoperable technology gradually.
Once completed, the national network will have approximately 16,800 km of state-of-the-art railway lines, thus restoring the entire control-command system, of which ERTMS is an integral part.
