Deputy Director of the Department of Investment Activities of Ukrzaliznytsia Volodymyr Shemayev said that the European Union had begun to develop a preliminary feasibility study for the European railway construction in Ukraine and Moldova.

The preliminary feasibility study development will be carried out by the technical advisory service JASPERS of the European Investment Bank under the guidance of the European Commission Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport. The work is planned to be completed by May 2023.

Even before the war, Ukraine planned to build a 1435 mm European standard track in four sections: Kyiv - Lviv - state border; Kyiv - Odesa; Kyiv - Kharkiv; Kyiv - Dnipro - Zaporizhzhia.

On May 24, 2022, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced Ukraine's intention to switch to the European standard gauge.
