The total investment amounts to 12.5 million euros. To ensure that the construction work can be carried out as quickly and safely as possible, it is necessary to close the line in this area and a rail replacement service will be set up between St. Pölten and Herzogenburg from July 5 to September 4.
Construction measures in detail
ÖBB is modernizing the line between St. Pölten and Herzogenburg to ensure continued reliable, safe and efficient operations. Above all, Viehofen is at the centre of the project: a modern, barrier-free stop is being built here with the construction of a new, contemporary platform with a covered waiting area and electronic customer information, a new Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facility and a new bus platform. In addition, the tracks will be renewed and, as the Viehofen traffic station will be integrated into the Vienna operations control centre, a new electronic interlocking will be built. In the course of this, the cable routes between St. Pölten and Herzogenburg will also be rebuilt.
As part of the modernization, the railroad crossing at the station will also be renewed. The railroad crossing will be equipped with a full barrier system and thus raised to a high safety level. For road traffic, this will result in the improvement that the currently existing call barrier, which is only opened when necessary, will give way to an automated operation in which the barrier is only closed when a train is coming and it is necessary due to operational requirements.
The construction of two bridge structures in Viehofen and St. Pölten is also on the agenda for this project. The construction work will take place on the Mühlbach bridge in Viehofen and the so-called "Mausloch" in St. Pölten. The "Mausloch" will then be passable for all road vehicles after the widening of the passage.

Impairment of the operational process
Due to these construction measures, no trains can run between St. Pölten main station and Herzogenburg from Tuesday, 05.07.2022, to Sunday, 04.09.2022. As a substitute, a rail replacement service with buses will be available in this section.
Furthermore, additional rail replacement buses will be offered between St. Pölten main station and Statzendorf as well as between St. Pölten main station and Herzogenburg school. Please note that some of the buses of the rail replacement service will run at different times (up to 15 minutes earlier).
