At the station in Friedberg, the excavators have already been rolling for several weeks: the demolition of the locomotive shed and the freight depot has already been largely completed. Extensive modernization work will continue until October, affecting both the technical rail facilities and customer areas in Friedberg. The station forecourt is being redesigned, a new, barrier-free island platform with a length of 160 meters including an access ramp is being built, seating, lighting and public address systems are being installed, and the Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facilities are being expanded. Technical facilities such as track switch connections, safety systems, cable routes, and signals will also be renewed during the modernization. In addition to ÖBB, the state of Styria and the municipality of Friedberg are contributing to the investment costs of around EUR 7 million.

ÖBB board member, Judith Engel: "We want to offer more and more people comfortable and barrier-free access to the railroad and therefore we are investing more than ever before in the infrastructure. When work is completed in the fall, Friedberg station will have a completely new look and offer travelers convenient access to public transport."
Transport Officer and Deputy Governor Anton Lang: "The modernization of the rail infrastructure is an important investment in the future. Our goal is to continue to significantly improve public transport and prepare it for future requirements - and not only in the form of the mega-projects Koralm Railway or Semmering Base Tunnel but also in rural areas. We want to create the most attractive opportunities for all Styrians to further facilitate the switch from car to public transport."
"I am pleased that the modernization of the station in Friedberg also succeeds in creating an additional incentive for our population to switch to the train. We hope that the offer will be used," says Friedberg's mayor, Wolfgang Zingl.
Construction work also at Grafendorf and Rohrbach-Vorau stations
To carry out the construction work in Friedberg, a two-month line closure is necessary from August 1 to September 24, 2022. The main modernization and maintenance work at the Grafendorf and Rohrbach-Vorau stations will also be carried out during this line closure. In addition to work on the platforms, parking lots, and track systems, the renewal of facilities accompanying the railroad, such as walls and culverts, will also be carried out. The railroad bridge in Dechantskirchen is also being renewed.
