The major expansion project of the Marchegger Ostbahn is progressing and has reached another milestone: the start of construction for the full double-track expansion of the line. Work will start immediately between Vienna Aspern North and Siebenbrunn-Leopoldsdorf. In addition to laying a second track, drainage ditches and basins will also be constructed. Work on the section between Schönfeld-Lassee and Marchegg, which is then still missing for the full double-track upgrade on the Austrian side, is expected to start in fall 2022.

ÖBB-Infrastruktur project manager Christian Trummer is pleased: "We are right on schedule with our work: The Vienna section of the line has already been upgraded to double track, in Lower Austria we have modernized five stations and equipped them with Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facilities, and replaced railroad crossings with underpasses or overpasses."

In the further course of the construction work, underpasses will still be built at Schönfeld-Lassee station (including passenger passage) and in Breitensee.

Effects of the construction work

From Saturday, 25.06.2022 (00:00 hrs) to Monday, 11.07.2022 (04:00 hrs), construction work will take place at Marchegg station and along the line to the Slovakian border. Therefore, all cross-border trains of the REX8 line between Marchegg - Devinska Nova Ves - Bratislava hl.st. (main station) are canceled during this period. For journeys between Vienna and Bratislava, the trains of line REX6 from Vienna main station via Bruck an der Leitha and Kittsee to Bratislava-Petržalka are available. From Petržalka station, travelers reach Bratislava hl.st main station by bus line 93 (access through the underpass from the station concourse). As a substitute for travelers from/to Marchegg and surroundings, ÖBB offers a limited shuttle bus service between Marchegg - Bratislava hl.st. The stop in Devínska Nová Ves is canceled without replacement. ÖBB recommends travelers on the Marchegg Eastern Railway to get informed about the desired connection on oebb.at, SCOTTY or at ÖBB Customer Service under 05 17 17 before starting their journey.

Due to the construction work, there may also be noise and dust during the night. ÖBB will inform the residents about this on an ongoing basis and asks for their understanding.
