Thales has been awarded a contract to coordinate the construction project and carry out works on the Ortigueira-Ribadeo section of the 740 metric gauge rail link, which connects Ferrol with Pravia as part of Adif’s “Telephone Blocking System Elimination Plan”. The current telephone blocking system will be replaced by an automated system, with interlockings remotely controlled from the Centralized Traffic Control Centre in El Berrón, Asturias.

With a budget of more than €20 million and a completion period of 27 months, the purpose of this project is to improve the rail service by enhancing safety and reliability, as well as increasing capacity and service frequency. The 101-kilometre section between Ortigueira station and the Ribadeo estuary bridge will include all necessary signalling installations, new electronic interlockings, a train detection system with AzLM axle counters, new LEDs, electric drives, an ASFA Digital protection system, and integration with the CTC. The project also includes new buildings, civil works, and a power system, as well as testing and commissioning.

This project follows Thales’ construction project for the removal of the telephone blockage on the Ferrol-Ortigueira section, to increase the line’s capacity and regularity of train movements. The project will also improve the safety and reliability of the facilities and reduce running costs by integrating the “Ferrol-Ortigueira” section into the remote control of the facilities from the Central CTC post in El Berrón (Asturias).

Once completed, this project will enhance the rail service for passengers and provide a better and safer travel experience. The implementation of an automated system will increase efficiency, while remote control from the Centralized Traffic Control Centre will improve safety and reliability. This project will enable Adif to provide a higher quality rail service with increased capacity and service frequency, ultimately resulting in a better experience for passengers.
