A major step in railway modernization is underway. Stadler Signaling and Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) have signed a deal to upgrade critical Swiss rail infrastructure.

On January 8, Stadler Signaling and Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) officially signed a contract to upgrade the signaling systems at Tavannes Station and the Orange Depot in the Bernese Jura region. This initiative is part of CJ’s broader modernization plan, aiming to upgrade half of the Tavannes-Le Noirmont line by 2027 using the latest generation of electronic interlocking systems. The goal is to enhance railway safety and operational precision. The contract is valued at 4.3 million CHF (approx. 4.6 million EUR).

To improve service quality and accommodate growing passenger demand, Chemins de fer du Jura, the Swiss government, and regional authorities invest millions of francs annually into CJ's rail infrastructure. This includes track improvements, traction systems, and advanced signaling technology. A key focus is installing electronic signal systems and upgrading train control mechanisms. These enhancements will ensure that rail operations remain precise and secure under all conditions, laying the groundwork for future network expansion.

Proven Technology for a Safer and More Efficient Rail System

With this modernization, passengers will experience safer, faster, and more comfortable travel in the future. This will be achieved through the installation of state-of-the-art electronic interlocking systems at Tavannes Station and the Orange Depot, set to be completed by 2027. On January 8, CJ and Stadler Signaling, headquartered in Wallisellen (ZH), signed the 4.3 million CHF agreement for project implementation. This security system upgrade is part of a broader redevelopment plan, ensuring that stations comply with Switzerland’s Disability Discrimination Act (BehiG).

In July 2019, CJ awarded Stadler a contract to completely overhaul the signaling systems at Tramelan Station. With the completion of upgrades at Tavannes, Orange, and Tramelan, half of the Tavannes-Le Noirmont line's security systems will be fully modernized.

Stadler’s EUROLOCKING safety systems, set to be installed in these three stations, are built on proven technology. Stadler has already modernized multiple CJ network stations, including Bellevue, Saignelégier, Alle, Alle Centre, Vendlincourt, and Bonfol.

A New Era for Regional Rail Transport

Marc Trippel, CEO of Stadler Signaling, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: "I am very pleased that we are expanding our cooperation with Chemins de fer du Jura to enhance rail safety at multiple stations. This contract confirms Stadler’s role in modernizing the railway system in the Bernese Jura and marks our expansion in the Swiss railway signaling sector."

Jean-Frédéric Python, Director of Chemins de fer du Jura, pointed out the importance of digital innovation in rail infrastructure: "Several years ago, CJ made the strategic decision to implement EUROLOCKING technology. Now, thanks to our experience, we are fortunate to collaborate with Stadler Signaling. Having a reliable partner located nearby ensures quick service response, minimizing disruptions for passengers. This partnership allows us to offer smooth, reliable, and sustainable transport services."
