In Leipzig, the first battery-powered train with passengers drove through the Leipzig City Tunnel on Saturday, September 18, 2021.
On behalf of the Zweckverband für die Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig (ZVNL), Stadler demonstrated the usability of vehicles with alternative drives in the Leipzig S-Bahn network on a four-hour journey from Delitzsch via Leipzig to Döbeln and back. The vehicle switched its drive type several times between overhead line operation and battery-electric drive.
The three carriage "Flirt Akku" used for the Leipzig premiere drive has been fully approved for use in passenger transport since 2018 and has since covered around 15,000 kilometers in pure battery mode. The test vehicle also had to pass various scenarios such as catching up on unplanned delays on the route and use under extreme weather conditions, for example in order to be able to check the reaction of the batteries and draw conclusions about their service life.
The presentation trip of the battery train took place as part of the European Mobility Week from September 16 to 22, 2021, during which innovative and sustainable transport solutions are advertised on the initiative of the European Commission.
