HS2 has taken a giant leap forward with Siemens Mobility securing EUR 670 million in groundbreaking contracts. From digital signaling to power systems, the UK’s rail future is being reshaped.

Siemens Mobility has secured four major contracts for the UK’s 225-kilometer-long HS2 high-speed rail project, connecting London to the West Midlands. The EUR 670 million contracts cover advanced train control systems, power supply infrastructure, and operational telecommunications, all set to modernize rail travel in the UK, as reported in the press release from Siemens Mobility.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, said: "HS2 is set to transform rail travel by offering faster and more reliable passenger journeys and freeing up freight paths in the UK. We are very proud to provide our wayside ATO over ETCS solution, enabling semi-automated train operations for improved capacity, punctuality, and energy efficiency on high-speed travel for the first time."

Digital Signaling for Safer and Faster Rail Travel

Siemens Mobility will deliver a state-of-the-art ETCS Level 2 signaling system with wayside Automatic Train Operation (ATO), which will replace traditional trackside signals with digital displays in train cabs, improving safety, reducing maintenance needs, and allowing for more efficient train operations. According to Ricardo Group, the technology has already been successfully used in projects like Thameslink and the East Coast Digital Programme, making it a proven solution for modern railways.

HS2: Changing the Face of UK Rail

As part of the project, Siemens Mobility will implement a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This advanced technology will allow real-time monitoring and control of rail equipment, improving reliability and efficiency. Siemens has years of experience with SCADA systems, including its work on London’s Elizabeth Line, ensuring a reliable and tested solution.

In partnership with Costain Ltd, Siemens Mobility will design and build traction and non-traction substations to power HS2 trains and other railway systems. These substations will efficiently deliver electricity from the National Grid to the railway network, supporting smooth and reliable operations.

The contracts also include Operational Telecommunications and Security Systems, featuring GSM-R technology for secure communication between drivers and operators. Siemens is preparing the system for future upgrades to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), ensuring it remains ready for the next generation of rail technology.

HS2 is set to revolutionize rail travel in the UK, delivering faster, more reliable connections between major cities. The new line will reduce travel times and increase capacity, benefiting both passengers and freight services. It will also ease congestion on existing lines, making rail a more sustainable choice for travel and transport.
