The Rail Baltica project is progressing with the State Railway Technical Inspection green-lighting the building design and issuing all construction permits for the future Salaspils Intermodal Logistics Center (SILC).

Located strategically near Salaspils, this hub will operate as Latvia's premier European standard gauge rail freight handling centre. SILC sits at the nexus of state highways A6, A4, and P5, promising seamless connectivity for rail and road freight. In addition, its proximity to crucial infrastructures like the Šķirotava station, Riga Freeport, railway stop Saulkalne and existing industrial locales ensures that SILC is poised for success.

SILC’s strategic positioning in the Salaspils municipality is a deliberate decision as it offers both the existing 1520mm and the new 1435mm standard gauge rail systems, integrating effortlessly with the larger European rail network. Its location, just a few minutes from pivotal points such as the Šķirotava station and an hour from the Riga Freeport, underlines its importance. Moreover, the immediate surroundings abound in essential resources — from industrial and logistics centres to critical energy infrastructure, signalling the potential for exponential growth in the industrial and logistics sectors within Salaspils and Ogre municipalities.

As for SILC's functionalities, its terrain will be home to many operations encompassing containerized freight handling, storage, transhipment, and specialized transportation. Beyond the railway dynamics, the terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, ranging from administrative facilities, cargo zones, and water treatment units to areas dedicated to business expansion. Spanning an estimated 200 hectares, with a stretch of about 7 km within the Rail Baltica mainline, the SILC project's optimization is already in the pipeline. Its completion is expected by the end of 2024, steered by the joint expertise of Latvian company SIA BRD projekts and Italian engineering firm Sintagma Srl, working under the aegis of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas.
