LTG Infra, the Lithuanian railway structure network manager, is installing two noise-absorbing walls in Šiauliai, providing a comfortable life for residents of more than 128 homes located in areas with heavy train traffic. The project's cost is estimated at EUR 2.68 million, excluding VAT. The EU financed EUR 1.85 million of the total cost, with Šiauliai City Council contributing EUR 209,000. LTG Infra provided for the rest of the expenses.

"Noise attenuation walls are the most effective solution to create a quieter environment for residents and ensure a safer railway infrastructure. It is especially true in areas where train traffic is heavy. Trains are the greenest mode of transport, and rail freight and passenger transport are the least polluting. To encourage greater use of the railway network, we are focusing on projects that create a greener environment and improve safety," says Karolis Sankovski, CEO of LTG Infra.

The two walls on Žaliūkių and Margiai Streets are 825 and 840 meters long, respectively. The height of the walls varies from 3.5 to 8 meters. The project will help provide acoustic comfort conditions for residential and public buildings. The areas for the implementation of this plan were selected based on the periodic monitoring of the noise level of railway traffic in Lithuania, with a precise focus on the population most exposed to noise.

"Intense train traffic and related noise caused inconvenience to some city residents, but now, after building up two noise-absorbing walls, we have solved this problem," commented Šiauliai Mayor Artūro Visocko.

The walls were designed not only for their practicality but also for their visual relevance to the areas in question, so the development was carried out in cooperation with LTG Infra and the municipality, taking into account architectural and design solutions.

Šiauliai is one of 9 noise reduction projects by LTG Infra and joins the list of cities with installed noise abatement walls, represented by such cities as Mažeikiai, Lentvaris, Radviliškis, and Kaišiadorys. In Klaipėda and Kretinga, the work is still in progress. The total cost of the noise abatement program is 24 million euros, excluding VAT.
