SNCF Réseau, the national rail network operator, is carrying out work to replace the railway bridge over the Dheune at Chagny for a total of €5.2 million, financed by SNCF Réseau.

A visit to the rail bridge removal site took place on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 in Chagny in the presence of Olivier Tainturier, Sub-Prefect of Chalon-sur-Saône, Michel Neugnot, First Vice-President of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, Denis Thomas, First Vice-President of the Communauté d'Agglomération Beaune Côte et Sud (Beaune Côte and South Agglomeration Community), Sébastien Laurent, Mayor of Chagny, and Jérôme Grand, Territorial Director of the SNCF Réseau Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

This operation aims to contribute to the network performance by guaranteeing optimal conditions of regularity and safety of rail traffic.

Work in progress since 2021

The bridge over the Dheune is a railway bridge supporting two electrified railroad tracks. Built in 1884, it has already undergone several vital repairs in 1956, 1982, and 1984 and repaintings in 1985. This metal structure could no longer be strengthened, so studies to replace the 32-meter bridge were launched in 2015.

The work that began in 2021 was mainly used to reinforce the part under the bridge rail: concrete injection under the existing walls and the pier creation in the middle of the river. After its prefabrication in 2021, the new bridge will be installed this summer. The old structure is dismantled, and the steel is recycled.

The renewal of the railway bridge takes place from July 25 to August 5, 2022, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm. The work will be completed in October 2022. An average of 10 people will be mobilized daily, and a dozen companies will be involved throughout the work, including Colas Rail, DVF, Maïa Sonnier and Locatelli. 2,500 hours are planned for people in work integration.

The banks and the site will be restored in September 2022 to be accessible to the public again. In the fall, plants will be planted to actively protect the banks while promoting the environment and its biodiversity.

A large-scale project

The renewal of a railway bridge is always a delicate operation that requires precision and technique. In the case of Chagny, the old bridge weighed nearly 180 tons. The new bridge weighs 800 tons (400 tons per section). The various structures are moved by a DEMAG SL3800 crane with imposing dimensions: 600 tons and a 54-meter long boom.

Impact on rail traffic

This work will interrupt traffic between Chagny, Montchanin and Paray-le-Monial. A replacement service by coach (limited number of seats) is in place during this period. The TER service between Dijon and Chalon is maintained at a rate of 26 return train journeys from Monday to Friday during the school vacations. The regional network MOBIGO also allows connecting Chalon-sur-Saône to the Creusotin basin by bus. (14 daily return trips Lines n°702/707, 702-708, 704, 711, 712).
