The German Bundestag has greenlit a proposal aimed at expediting the expansion of both road and rail networks. Spearheaded by the traffic light coalition's parliamentary groups, the initiative intends to streamline and accelerate multiple planning and approval processes.

Specific projects benefiting from this move include rail enhancements, alleviation of motorway traffic congestion, and bridge renovations. However, this expedited framework won't extend to the construction of new motorways. The Federal Council's nod is the final step for this legislation to be enacted, though the move has garnered criticism from environmentalists. Groups like Greenpeace have cautioned against the adverse environmental implications, especially noting that further motorway expansions would have a detrimental impact on nature.

In a parallel move towards sustainable transport, the Bundestag has extended the scope of the truck toll, placing a more significant emphasis on emissions. Starting from December, a carbon dioxide surcharge will be implemented. Additionally, July will mark the inclusion of lighter trucks, those weighing 3.5 tonnes and above, in the toll regime on motorways and federal roads—a change from the previous 7.5 tonnes threshold. This new toll structure is anticipated to motivate a shift towards environmentally friendlier transport solutions. Significantly, a portion of the proceeds generated from this truck toll will be redirected to fund future rail investments.

Lastly, amendments to the Road Traffic Act are in motion to ensure all road users benefit equally. These changes empower municipalities to prioritize local public transport by introducing dedicated lanes, amplifying cycle paths, and easing the establishment of 30 km/h zones near educational institutions like schools and daycare centers. Hanover's Mayor Onay expressed support, emphasizing the logic behind 30 km/h zones in many regions, even though current regulations make widespread implementation a challenge.
