The Theemsweg Route is four kilometers long railway in the Rotterdam harbor, and it was opened three months ago. How is it doing so far?

Around 10,000 trains have already traveled on this route without any disruptions or delays. There is an unbelievable number of around a hundred trains a day now on the first section of the Betuwe Route that connects Rotterdam with Germany.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority’s Chief Operations Officer, Boudewijn Siemons, is pleased. “We are committed to the European sustainability goal of transporting 50% more freight over the Dutch railway system within 10 years. An increase from 40 to 61 million tonnes.  This goal can only be achieved with a well-functioning rail link.”

As the rail freight transportation is increasing those who want to be part of it have to adapt and be able to accommodate more traffic. The Port of Rotterdam Authority knows this and so it is planning to build more infrastructure. It already launched a project for the development of the Maasvlakte South Marshalling Yard. It will entail four bundles of six tracks and two through tracks built in phases. The first bundle should be operational in 2027.
