Geismar Italia S.p.A had two types of rail inspection vehicles tested for use on the Irish rail network. For this purpose, the internationally renowned manufacturer of track construction machines had appointed PJM.
As an accredited test centre according to ISO/IEC 17025, PJM carried out approval tests in the areas of running behaviour, brakes, and acoustics. The tests to evaluate running characteristics were completed in accordance with EN 14363. For brake technology approval, the static and dynamic tests took place according to EN 14033. The acoustics measurements were performed according to TSI Noise 2014/1304/EU. The two rail inspection vehicles involved in these tests are of the type "Track Recording Vehicle VMB" and an "Ontrack Inspection Car". The project will be completed in the course of the summer.

A particularly interesting aspect of this project was that Ireland, as a member state of the EU, has to apply European regulations, but the Irish railroad system differs considerably from that in continental Europe. For example, the track gauge in Ireland is 1,600mm instead of the standard gauge of 1,435mm. It is therefore necessary to apply the respective sets of rules, taking into account the specific conditions in Ireland. "The deep understanding of the railway system available at PJM was very helpful here, and it was thus possible to demonstrate compliance with the requirements from the sets of rules under the special boundary conditions in Ireland," summarizes Martin Joch, CEO of PJ Messtechnik GmbH.
