The Rhaetian Railway, known for its picturesque landscapes and featuring the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Bernina and Albula lines, presents unique technical challenges.

With curves up to 45 m in radius and inclines up to 70 ‰, the Stadler AG Allegra multiple-unit train is perfectly suited for these demanding track requirements. PJM, an experienced Austrian system specialist, was commissioned to conduct running tests to evaluate the performance of various train compositions under specific operating conditions.

The project involved several stages, including simulations to determine wheel-rail and buffer forces, which helped identify critical conditions and minimize metrological effort. The team prepared measuring wheelsets, accelerators, displacement sensors, and measuring buffers in Graz before installing them on the measuring wagon at the RhB main workshop in Landquart. The measurement campaign was conducted between Poschiavo and Alp Grüm, with test runs taking place in November 2022 and data analysis and reporting recently completed.

Martin Joch, CEO of PJM, highlights the company's test-driving expertise, experience with measuring wheelsets, and the efficiency of simulations, which enable an effective combination of theoretical and practical results. PJM's mobile calibration test stands for measuring wheelsets were also used for the first time in this project, ensuring measurement reliability on-site.
