On September 1, the Kaiserbahnhof in Potsdam was all about sustainable mobility in tourism: Representatives of the major environmental organisations, BUND, NABU, VCD and Deutsche Bahn, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the cooperation Fahrtziel Natur with around 115 guests. Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke was also among the well-wishers.

Fahrtziel Natur is a pioneer for sustainable mobility in tourism. As a trademark, all areas have a well-developed public transport system. It makes the switch to climate-friendly mobility on holiday attractive and easy. In addition, the offer of free local mobility with a guest card has become standard in two-thirds of the Destination Nature areas since the cooperation was established.

During the ceremony, the Swabian Alb biosphere region was added to the cooperation. It means that national parks, nature parks and biosphere reserves are now involved in 24 Destination Nature areas in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. At the start, in April 2001, there were only six German protected areas.

Dr Richard Lutz, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Bahn: "20 years of Fahrtziel Natur stand for the desire for sustainable travel. Without a real change in mobility, we will not be able to achieve the German and European climate targets. With cooperations like Fahrtziel Natur, we get even more people excited about rail and public transport and show how much fun sustainable travel can be."

Kerstin Haarmann, Federal Chairwoman of Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD): "For two decades, Fahrtziel Natur has been promoting and calling for environmentally compatible rail travel to the beautiful holiday regions of the participating large-scale protected areas and local mobility - ideally free of charge with the guest card. Through the increasingly better developed public transport in the Destination Nature areas, climate protection goals are realised and natural landscapes are protected through less car traffic."

Jörg-Andreas Krüger, President of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU): "20 years of joint work for sustainable nature holidays in Germany are an important contribution to climate-friendly holidays, the conservation of nature and impressive landscapes and quality of life. Great mobility offers on-site then make you want to use public transport - even after your holiday."

Olaf Bandt, Chairman of Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND): "I am pleased that we have been able to achieve a lot in the last two decades: Not only has the number of areas involved in Fahrtziel Natur grown steadily. We also understand better and better where to start on site so that the car becomes superfluous for guests."

Destination Nature areas promote the sustainable development of their rural regions. The primary goal is to relieve sensitive natural landscapes from car traffic. In the Destination Nature areas, supporting groups develop special offers and concepts to encourage tourists to switch from car to public transport. In this way, cooperation makes an important contribution to climate protection.
