For travellers in Poland, the railway station in Ełk will be better accessible thanks to an investment by PKP Polskie Linii Kolejowe S.A. The reconstruction of the tracks is progressing. There will be safer and faster travel and efficient transport of goods. The construction of safe two-level road crossings with tracks is advanced. The PLN 587 million investment is co-financed by the CEF Connecting Europe Facility.

In Ełk, the passenger and freight station is being transformed. The contractor laid several kilometres of track. Thousands of tonnes of materials and steel were used to build the new facilities (70,000 tonnes of ballast, 2,500 tonnes of rail and reinforcement steel). Platforms, tracks and rail traffic control equipment are being rebuilt. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.

At Ełk station, the contractor is completing the construction of platform No. 3. There is already a new surface and canopy. Information boards and benches will be installed, as well as energy-efficient LED lighting. A subway has been made available on a limited basis next to the worksite to facilitate communication through the station area. Once finished, the tunnel will provide convenient access to the new platforms and a transition between the two parts of the city. Lifts and special signage will facilitate communication for people with reduced mobility.

Travellers at the Ełk Szyba Wschód stop board trains from the new platform. The contractor has started work on the opposite side of the tracks. For the duration of the construction work, access to the new platform is provided by a temporary crossing and a rail-level crossing.

Viaducts to improve safety

Work is progressing on the construction of two-level road-rail crossings. The collision-free crossings will increase the safety level of rail and road traffic. All structures are being built in stages so that trains can run.

The construction of the railway viaduct over Kolejowa Street, which will replace the level crossing, is halfway complete. A new track has already been laid and trains are running on it, and the contractor has started work on the second part of the structure.

The situation is similar to the construction of the railway viaduct over Towarowa Street. Half of the structure is complete and a new track is being laid. Work on the access roads will continue. The planned traffic solution involves the construction of a parallel road viaduct. The supports and reinforced slab of the new viaduct have been constructed over Suwalska Street, which will ensure the safe passage of trains, including heavy goods trains, for many years. Work on the structure is progressing. Work on the new abutments can be seen at the construction of the bridge over the Ełk River.

The investment, worth PLN 587 million, is being carried out as part of the project 'Works on the E 75 railway line on the section Białystok - Suwałki - Trakiszki (state border), stage I section Białystok - Ełk'. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. The investment is co-financed by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
