PESA Bydgoszcz S.A. – leading Polish company producing and modernizing rolling stock prepares surprise for TRAKO fair – company will present the first Polish hydrogen – powered locomotive to the public
CEO PESA Bydgoszcz S.A. Krzysztof Zdziarski during Immpact’21 conference in Warsaw, he informed about the project being implemented and for the first time publicly presented visualizations of the hydrogen locomotive.
The implementation of the innovative project began in 2019, when Pesa established a special research and development team, which aims to produce prototypes of a shunting locomotive and a multiple unit with drives using hydrogen fuel cells.
At present, the implementation of this project is at the level of 70%. Key components, including hydrogen cells, have already arrived at the factory in Bydhošť and currently the ongoing work is linked with building the construction. The whole project is implemented in cooperation with PKN Orlen and Orlen Koltrans together with other partners who technologically support this project, such as ABB and TSA.
The new hydrogen vehicle from Pesa is built on the basis of the SM42 shunting locomotive. The future locomotive will be four-axled, with traction engines 4x180kW. In the vehicle will be used hydrogen tanks - 175 kg, Traction batteries of type LTO 167,6 kWh and cells with power of 2x85 kW. The manufacturer managed to preserve the original traction properties of the locomotive, which means that it can drag the set up to 3200 tons.
The new locomotive is characterized by its design. An important element of the construction is the position of the engine-driver's cab in the middle of the vehicle, thanks to which the locomotive acquires a modern appearance, while increasing the field of view and safety of the work of the staff.
The premiere of the Pesa hydrogen locomotive will take place in the second half of September in Gdańsk region during this year's 14th international railway fair TRAKO. 2021.
PESA is also working on the implementation of hydrogen propulsion in passenger rolling stock.
