Network Rail has been monitoring the viaduct for a long time due to its disturbed statics. The structure of the bridge is so damaged that it is no longer safe for passenger or freight trains to travel over the bridge. For security reasons, river traffic will also be limited. The south arch of the Nuneham Viaduct will be closed until 5th May 2023 as part of the initial works. Since the southern river arch will be closed, boat traffic will be two-way on the northern riverside.

Due to the reconstruction work, a pontoon will be attached to the river, which will be moved immediately after the reconstruction is completed. As Haines stated, they are "working as quickly as possible to carry out the necessary assessments and repairs, but the nature of the damage, the soil conditions, and the limitations of the site mean that this is not at all easy.”
