Work on a 17-kilometre tunnel to extend the M3 line between Bakirkoy and Kirazli has been completed. According to the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey, Adil Karaismailoğlu, the project progress has reached 70%.

Two TBMs were used for such significant work at 13.5 kilometres, while the remaining 3.5 kilometres were excavated using the classical method.

"We continue our works such as station finishing works, reinforced concrete, electromechanical and signalling installation to complete the project within a year," comments Adil Karaismailoğlu.

In general, the project on the M3 line, aimed at its extension, includes the construction of 7 stations on 8.4 kilometres. In the future, M3 will provide uninterrupted subway service on the entire line, and the capacity of the continuation will be 70,000 passengers per hour in each direction. The line will facilitate access to business and industrial areas in the north and residential areas in the city south from densely populated areas running vertically down through the E5 and E6 freeways.

To overcome traffic problems in Istanbul, "it is extremely crucial to expand the rail systems. This is the best mobility solution a city can provide inhabitants to travel in a fast and easy manner," said Adil Karaismailoğlu.
