Network Rail, which manages much of Britain's rail structure, announced a major investment of GBP 83 million (EUR 98.64 million) to upgrade the railroads for passengers over the Easter Bank Holidays.

The company will be working on 530 projects, engineering work on which will affect only about 5% of the total network. Nevertheless, passengers are advised to plan their trips due to possible disruptions on some routes.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said: “We will be carrying out hundreds of vital projects that will improve passengers’ journeys in future – for example by improving reliability and boosting capacity on the network.”

Among the planned works, Network Rail will carry out resignalling and switch and crossing work at Clapham Junction, track upgrades on the plain lines, switch and crossing, and HS2 work at London Euston and Watford North to increase the capacity of the section and ensure safety for passengers. Moreover, the bridge at the south junction of Coventry and Hampton-in-Arden will undergo renewal works, which include providing it with HS2 to increase station capacity in the future. Bishop's Stortford will upgrade switches and crossings, and Hartford East Station will be upgraded to improve its capacity.

In addition, Network Rail's plans include upgrades to the Gatwick Airport station to increase its capacity. In the Llanhilleth area, track upgrades will be carried out as a contribution to the multimillion-pound upgrade of the Ebbw Vale line for improved passenger travel.
