EUR 28.52 million contract has been signed between the Portuguese government and the Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP). Their mutual plan is to remove the current traffic obstructions and to increase the transport capacity of the Sines – South Line which will be beneficial on a global level.
This contract has been signed by António Laranjo, the President of IP, and Marcos Rubio Blanco, the representative of Sacyr Neopul/ Sacyr Somague consortium. The ceremonial signing was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure Pedro Nuno Santos, and the Secretary of State for Infrastructure Jorge Delgado.
Modernization Programme of the National Railway Network, Ferrovia 2020 is responsible for this project aiming at modernization of existing railway infrastructure and creating a direct link between Sines and Badajoz
The modernization plan that involves Ermidas Sado and Sines will include rebuilding the train tracks, quay, upgrading the drainage system, as well as the reconstruction of two passageways. Sacyr is planning a development of a new technical station as well as modernizing the current one which will fix the basic infrastructure for signaling and telecommunications.
Polyvalent monoblock concrete sleepers are going to be used while fixing the tracks, including the removal of 60 E1 level crossings. Building of a new technical station and a new track map at São Bartolomeu da Serra station.
750m long-trains will be able to run along with the rail connection, therefore increasing transport capacity. This project also gives an opportunity to increase the maximum speed to 100km/h while increasing from 36 freight trains per day with a length of 400 meters to 42 freight trains per day with a length of 750 meters.
