According to estimates by the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT), once the terminal is operational, road traffic will be relieved by 150,000 trucks every year. It will be equipped with two six-track sets and six gantry cranes to handle the 750-meter-long trains. The total investment in the project amounts to 108 million euros, with Switzerland financing more than half. It is not the first time that Switzerland has invested in rail freight transport projects outside its borders, given that they have long sought to shift freight volumes from road to rail. As reported by FOT, the Helvetic Confederation has, in the past, co-financed projects in Antwerp, Duisburg, and Singen, as well as the modernization projects of the Hupac and Piacenza terminals near Milan.

The construction of the terminal, which will be called La Piccola Velocità, is to begin at the beginning of next year and be completed by 2026. It should cover an area of 100,000 square meters. Among other things, its equipment will consist of five rails with a length of 750 meters and another five rails for temporary stops.
