The Lithuanian Railways (LTG) Group is making efforts to reduce its dependence on Russia and Belarus, including steps to shift away from the KLUB-U safety system used in locomotives.
The Group has already launched a new safety system that is being tested on a diagnostic vehicle and four locomotives. The LTG Group plans to initiate a dynamic purchasing system to sign LSS purchase/installation contracts with chosen suppliers, with the first equipment expected to be received by next year and the final installation by the end of 2026.

The LTG Group has developed a programme to replace the VSS on all locomotives and self-propelled trainsets, which will ensure a sustainable long-term solution. The public domain is currently discussing a tender to procure the mandatory maintenance of VMS on LTG Cargo locomotives, which will be available to Lithuanian businesses, with businesses from unfriendly countries not allowed to participate in the procurement.

KLUB-U is still used temporarily on locomotives and self-propelled trainsets, and a Western world-recognised VSS solution that is compatible with the 1520 mm gauge is being sought by LTG. The Group has contacted manufacturers of railway safety systems in different countries and examined possible solutions to find the optimal solution with the necessary functionality and national security that can be adapted to LTG's needs. The LTG Group's aim is to ensure that its transportation system operates safely and independently.
