LTG Infra will construct a dual-purpose military and civilian loading yard in Palemonas, Kaunas. It will also include the construction of railway tracks and the upgrading and installation of engineering networks.

In March, LTG Infra launched a public tender for the procurement of design services and civil design services for the project "Installation of a military/civilian loading bay in Palemonas", and in April, a public tender was launched for the procurement of the design of the construction of the 1435 mm gauge Palemonas sidings, as well as for part of the civil design services. The contract with the winning bidder is expected to be signed in the third quarter of this year.

"We aim to contribute to Lithuania's military mobility by increasing the loading and unloading capacity for civil/military cargo at Kaunas Palemonas railway station. Kaunas is currently the furthest (northernmost) point in Lithuania connected to the European rail network. Freight transported along the North Sea-Baltic Corridor includes military freight of vital importance to the common security and training of NATO forces. By implementing this project and increasing the handling capacity, we will create additional benefits for the country's businesses," says Rūta Jakubauskienė, Acting CEO of LTG Infra.

This procurement involves the design and installation of three additional 1435 mm gauge tracks at Palemonas station. The total length of the new tracks is expected to be around 3000 metres. The installation of noise attenuation walls will be foreseen if necessary, as well as the restructuring of utilities.

The project will expand the capacity of the Palemonas siding in the vicinity of the loading bay by providing three additional tracks, allowing vehicles to access the loading bay on both standard and wide gauge tracks and to carry out the necessary shunting of the wagon trainsets, thus contributing to the smooth implementation of the loading process. These solutions will not only contribute to the loading needs of military mobility but will also enable the yard to be adapted for bulk loading on the 1435 mm gauge.
