LTG Infra, the company managing the Lithuanian public railway infrastructure network, has started planned repairs to the trackbed on the Kalvarija-Šeštokai section. The repair work is planned to completely stop train traffic for 13 days on European standard (1435 mm) and 1520 mm gauge tracks. Traffic is scheduled to resume on 28 June.

"The planned repair works on the Kalvarija-Šeštokai section are being carried out to continue to ensure smooth and safe train movements. During the repairs, part of the track will be dismantled, the crossing will be cut and reinforcement works will be carried out. The connection with Poland is important both for freight traffic and for the resumption of passenger traffic from Kaunas to Bialystok," says Arvydas Dveilys, LTG Infra Maintenance Manager.

According to Mr. Dveilys, the traffic break was planned well in advance, and freight and passenger traffic through Šeštoki is being organized accordingly.

The transport of agricultural products from Ukraine will also be suspended at that time. During the traffic break, regular services from Ukraine to Lithuania will be coordinated, as well as the loading of trains in Ukraine and the transport of trains through the territory of Poland towards Lithuania will continue. Only after the resumption of train traffic will trains continue to move towards the Klaipėda seaport.

The Ukrainian cargo should reach the Šeštokai loading yard as soon as the repair work on the railway crossing is completed. Intermodal cargo from Duisburg in Germany will be transported to Šeštokai and transhipped onto road vehicles. The military cargo is expected to arrive at Šeštoky in early July. The planned traffic interruption has been agreed with the customers and will therefore have little impact on train movements.

LTG Link, the passenger train company, is resuming international train services to Poland in cooperation with the Polish carrier Polregio. Trains on the route Kaunas-Balstogue-Kaunas will resume on 1 July.
