Today, only about a third of the entire railroad network in the Czech Republic is electrified (34% or about 3,000 km). The railway administration is planning to launch large-scale electrification, about 564 km of lines are in the project preparation stage.
A railway electrification system supplies electric power to railway trains and trams without an onboard prime mover or local fuel supply. It leads to the "green" railroad creation minimizing emissions and environmental damages.
For comparison, in Slovakia, the figure is 47%, in Germany 53%, and in Austria 71%. The best indicators represent Spain (83%) and France (96%), and Luxembourg with a 100% electrified railroad shows the best result.
