Kosovo Railway Infrastructure Director-General Zymer Zekaj and Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie (GCF) President Edoardo Rossi have signed an agreement to modernize and build the second line of the Fushë Kosovë - Mitrovica line.

GCF will carry out the work following the requirements of technical standards for interoperability and European standards to increase rail safety, passenger conditions, train speeds, and the number of trains per day.

The signing of the contract “marks the continuation for the realization of railway line 10 rehabilitation which paves the way also for the third phase from Mitrovica to Leshak, and we hope together with the contractor that our objective will be realized as soon as possible in terms of time and quality as required by European standards, to get closer to Europe as soon as possible,” the CEO of Infrakos said.

After the completion of the project, it will be possible to increase the cruising speed to 100 km / h and ensure safe conditions for the transport of passengers and cargo. The project includes the installation of modern signaling and telecommunications and electrification work. The project will increase the speed of passenger and freight transport from 20 km / h to 100 km / h and the axle load of freight transport to 22.5 tonnes. The line gets expected to use 1.2 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes.
