Joe Biden supported this plan. The route through Israel could connect India with Europe and the US.
IMEC was officially announced during the G20 Summit in New Delhi on 9 September 2023. The initiative received support from India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and European countries. It was presented as a strategic infrastructure project that could reshape trade connections between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
What the IMEC Corridor Was Supposed to Connect
The IMEC corridor was designed to connect India, the Middle East, and Europe through an integrated intermodal transport network, as mentioned on the official website. The initiative combines different types of infrastructure, including ports, railways, roads, energy systems, and digital networks. Its main goal is to create a faster and more efficient trade route between Asia and Europe.
The corridor is based on the combination of multiple transport modes within one connected system. Goods would move through maritime routes, railway lines, and logistics hubs. Digital technologies and modern infrastructure would support the entire network, improving supply chain efficiency and reducing transportation costs.

How the India–Europe Route Would Work
The India–Europe route consists of two connected corridors. The East Corridor leads from India to the UAE. The North Corridor continues from the Middle East towards Europe.
Together, these connections were planned to create a new trade link between Asian markets and European economies.

Could IMEC Compete with Existing Trade Corridors?
With the development of new technologies and advanced logistics solutions, IMEC could become a strong competitor to existing trade routes. These include the New Silk Road routes passing through Türkiye and Russian transit connections reaching Europe through intermodal terminals such as Małaszewicze in Poland.
Compared with traditional corridors, IMEC could provide greater diversification of trade flows and reduce dependence on individual transit routes. It could also improve the resilience of international supply chains.

Where the United States Fits into IMEC
The project could strengthen economic cooperation between India, Gulf countries, Europe, and the United States. Although the physical route does not extend directly to North America, it could support transatlantic trade by improving connections between Indian and European ports.
According to official statements, IMEC could also contribute to shorter transportation times towards the US market. After reaching Europe, goods could continue across the Atlantic and gain easier access to the East Coast of North America.

Why the IMEC Corridor Has Yet to Start
Despite its strategic importance, according to The Jerusalem Post, the corridor has not yet become operational. Its development has been affected by geopolitical tensions, regional instability, and the need for significant infrastructure investment.
The future of IMEC depends on the ability of participating countries to overcome political and logistical challenges and transform the ambitious plan into a functioning trade corridor.
