Stadler has finished a big project with the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), modernizing 60 of their first-generation FLIRT trains.
This project, part of a larger fleet of 123 vehicles, aimed to standardize the technical features of these units with those of newer models, enhancing the overall service quality. The modernization, completed within four years as planned, was done by a consortium led by Stadler, enabling MÁV-START to operate a technically uniform fleet and elevating passenger experience and operational efficiency.
The need for the refurbishment arose from the necessity to harmonize the older FLIRT units with 63 newly acquired ones, addressing the growing demand for passenger services. This update introduced enhanced travel comfort, better fuel efficiency, and simplified operations. Notable upgrades included improved passenger information systems, the installation of charging sockets for electronic devices, upgraded handicap lifts for more accessible entry, and anti-graffiti coatings in toilet areas. Additionally, the refurbishment saw the incorporation of Braille text for visually impaired passengers and an advanced video surveillance system for increased security.
