Transport for Wales (TfW) has recently completed the refurbishment of its entire fleet of Class 153 railcars, a move aimed at providing customers on its Wales and Borders network with better facilities. The final two units were rolled out of Chrysalis Rail's Landore works in June, featuring a fully refurbished interior, recovered seats, and renewed fittings, as well as a new TfW grey and red livery.

TfW has grown its Class 153 fleet from eight units in 2018 to 26 units today, as it seeks to acquire additional rolling stock to increase capacity across its network. Currently, the refurbished units operate on several routes, including the Heart of Wales Line, routes in North and West Wales, and the Core Valley Lines to Rhymney, Coryton, the City Line, and Cardiff Bay. TfW has also purchased four more units that are awaiting reconfiguration to provide enhanced cycle storage on the Heart of Wales Line.

Kieran Hickman, TfW's Engineering Projects and Interface Manager, expressed his satisfaction with the project, noting that despite the challenges they faced over the last year, they were delighted with the completed work. He extended his thanks to Chrysalis Rail for their hard work on the programme.
Jerry Howells, TfW's Head of Asset Management, expressed his excitement at the upgrades, emphasizing that modern railway networks should always deliver improvements for customers. The refurbishment of the Class 153 fleet is part of TfW's £40 million refurbishment programme, which also included the refresh of the Class 175, 150, and 158 trains. Moreover, TfW is investing more than £800 million on a fleet of brand new trains, which will enter service later this year, further improving the Wales and Borders network.
