DB subsidiary Deutsche Bahn International Operations (DB IO) has won the competition for a multi-million euro contract to operate India's first high-speed rail project. DB IO will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to be implemented by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). The order volume of the 12-year contract is in the three-digit million range. DB IO will operate 40 trains on the Delhi-Meerut-RRTS corridor as well as maintain the rail infrastructure. Once fully operational, the project is expected to carry more than 800,000 passengers daily.
"We are pleased to contribute to the Indo-German partnership for green urban mobility as the operator of the Delhi-Meerut corridor. In doing so, we are actively supporting the sustainable urban development and traffic relief of one of the world's largest metropolitan regions with a population of over 46 million," said Niko Warbanoff, Chief Executive Officer of the DB E.C.O. Group.
"As NCRTC, we look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership with DB. The RRTS project will benefit from DB's global expertise and experience in technology-driven operations and predictive maintenance, which will provide passengers with a comfortable and safe journey. This partnership will bring about a paradigm shift in the operational management of rail-based transport in India, which will open up new opportunities for DB. I am convinced that RRTS, a flagship project of the Prime Minister of India, will usher in a new chapter of the rail-bound transport system in our country," said Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director, NCRTC.

After the billion-dollar contract in Toronto, the Delhi project is the second major international passenger transport project for DB IO in 2022. "We are successfully exporting German rail and climate protection know-how and getting high added value for rail in Germany through technology and knowledge transfer," Warbanoff said.
Technology and knowledge transfer as well as the reinvestment of profits benefit the strong railways in Germany. The line will be equipped with state-of-the-art ETCS Level 2/Hybrid Level 3 technology in combination with automatic train control (ATO). The technology is also to be used in Germany shortly. Train communications will be based on LTE technology, which is significantly more powerful than conventional GSM and will see one of the world's first deployments in Delhi. Operations are scheduled to start in 2023.
As a specialist in the operation and maintenance of rail transport systems, DB IO is responsible for international operator projects outside Europe.
