At Berlin's Ostbahnhof station, travelers and visitors can now shop around the clock at the new 24/7 ServiceStore. In this travel supplies store, guests don't need to pull out their wallets or stand in line at the checkout. Thus, shopping becomes "Pick&Ride" according to the Pick&Go principle at the train station. Customers gain access via an app, and the purchase is also billed digitally. In this way, travelers can also use a short stay at the station efficiently. With this additional service at Ostbahnhof, DB is improving the service for around 80,000 travelers and visitors daily.

Horst Mutsch, Head of Sales Commercial at DB Station&Service AG, says, "With the pioneering concept of our 24/7 ServiceStore, we are making Berlin's Ostbahnhof more attractive and showing how digitization offers our customers real benefits in their daily shopping. After all, our goal is to use modern stations and innovative services to help make environmentally friendly rail their preferred mode of transport for even more commuters and travelers."

Martina Klement, State Secretary for Digitization and Administrative Modernization at the Berlin Senate Chancellery, said, "The opening of the 24/7 ServiceStore at Berlin's Ostbahnhof station is a great example of how digital progress can simplify everyday life and bring about positive changes for all of us. Artificial intelligence and digitalization are tools in this context that offer new and efficient solutions to various challenges - such as the shortage of skilled workers or even the acceleration of administrative processes."

Wenzel Bürger, Managing Director of SSP Germany and franchise partner of ServiceStore DB, comments, "We see the new 24/7 ServiceStore as a real milestone in the further development of stationary retail. We are convinced that concepts of this kind have a great future. With our expertise as Food Travel Experts and long-standing partners of Deutsche Bahn, we are looking forward to cooperating and operating this innovative store concept, which fits seamlessly into and enriches our digitization strategy."

How does cashier-less shopping work?

Customers register once in advance in the 24/7 ServiceStore app with their data (minimum age 14) and details of the payment method (credit card, PayPal). To gain access to the store, customers scan a QR code generated in the app at the entrance. The purchase works according to the Pick&Go principle, meaning customers select the desired products and simply leave the store with them. The app then automatically calculates the total amount of the purchase and creates an invoice, of which customers are informed by e-mail. It is made possible by the use of artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art camera technology. The app is a web app that customers can download and use in their web browser, regardless of the operating system of any device. To purchase products with age restrictions, customers must also verify their age.
