What does a modern, climate-conscious freight future look like? Ermewa just gave us a glimpse. At Transport Logistic 2025 in Munich, the rail freight giant celebrated a landmark achievement—reaching 50,000 wagons—while unveiling its next big leap: an automated wagon for palletised goods aimed at boosting sustainability and accelerating Europe’s modal shift.
According to Ermewa, its portfolio now includes 120 wagon types spanning eight key segments: aggregates and worksites, automotive, chemistry, grain, energy, intermodal, palletised goods, and steel. This wide-ranging offer supports a variety of freight requirements across Europe.
Innovation and Asset Modernisation
Ermewa Managing Director Peter Reinshagen stated: "With our 50,000 wagons, we offer one of the broadest portfolios in the industry. Our aim is to be the first choice for efficient, sustainable and future-oriented solutions." Reinshagen pointed out that the company’s success relies on "close and trusting cooperation with our customers and manufacturers." As reported by Ermewa, the landmark 50,000th wagon added to the fleet in May 2025 was a Laaers car-carrier, signalling further expansion in the automotive transport segment, which was first added to the company's offer in 2024.
The company’s extensive investment programme underpins this growth. Over the last five years, Ermewa has not only expanded the fleet but also significantly reduced the average wagon age by five to seven years, depending on the type. The intermodal segment has seen particularly strong investment during this period, aligning with market trends that demand more flexible and efficient rail solutions.

Focus on Sustainability and the Modal Shift
Beyond numbers, Ermewa’s strategic vision is closely tied to Europe's decarbonisation agenda. Reinshagen confirmed: "The future of freight transport lies in efficient wagon solutions that meet the specific requirements of our customers and the changing freight structures." The company views its investment strategy as a direct contribution to climate-neutral and efficient transport chains.
Ermewa has long advocated for a modal shift from road to rail, identifying it as essential for achieving carbon-neutral logistics. This has prompted not only a rejuvenation of the fleet but also ongoing development of new wagon types tailored to changing industry demands.

New Wagon for Palletised Goods Unveiled
At its stand in Munich’s Outdoor Area FM 704A/3, Ermewa revealed a demonstrator for a brand-new wagon dedicated to palletised goods—a rapidly growing segment in the European logistics market. As stated by the company, the innovation includes a fully automated opening tarpaulin, aimed at simplifying and accelerating the loading and unloading process, thereby reducing operational downtime and increasing efficiency.
According to Ermewa, the wagon is being developed to meet rising demand from industries seeking more adaptable and sustainable rail options for moving palletised cargo. By addressing specific pain points in rail freight handling, Ermewa is hoping to increase rail’s appeal as a reliable alternative to road transport.
The unveiling was designed to give clients, logistics stakeholders, and infrastructure partners a preview of Ermewa’s approach to smart, service-focused rail solutions. Visitors at Transport Logistic 2025 were able to explore the innovation first-hand, reinforcing Ermewa’s position at the forefront of technical development in freight wagon design.
