The European Investment Bank (EIB) plans to provide EUR 299 million for the construction of the third part of the Northern Macedonia VIII Railway Corridor. The total value of the project is 500 million euros. The eastern part of the corridor is to be connected by the city of Kriva Palanka with the Bulgarian border.

The section Kriva Palanka-Deve Bair (border with Bulgaria) is 24 km long. It will be funded from several sources. Part of the funds will be provided from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), part of the EU grant will come from the EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and Northern Macedonia itself will contribute something.

The Eastern Rail Corridor VIII is divided into three sections, Kumanovo-Belakovce, Beljakovce-Kriva Palaka, and Kriva Palanka - Deve Bair on the border with Bulgaria. The construction of sections I. and II. began in November 2022 and will be completed in 2026. Section III is to be completed in 2030.

The eastern part of the corridor (Kuman-Bulgarian border) is part of the project for the extension of the TEN-T nuclear network to the Western Balkans. The cross-border connection between Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria will be fully electrified, the freight transport capacity should be significantly increased, and the time between Skopje and Sofia will be significantly reduced.
