The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) has issued a favorable decision on the environmental impact assessment procedure for the S80 high-speed line between Vienna Hütteldorf and Vienna Meidling modernization, which will create a 15-minute frequency. The project is scheduled to take place between 2024 and 2028.

An environmental impact statement was first submitted in the summer of 2020, with further oral hearings one year later, in the summer of 2021. Numerous comments from private citizens and four citizen initiatives were submitted during the EIA process and were eventually considered. A design competition will be launched in coordination with the City of Vienna and the 13th District in the form of an Austria-wide idea contest. The interim results of the competition will be presented in the summer of 2022, and the winning projects will be selected in the fall.

The project involves building two new stops, modernizing one-stop, and redesigning public transportation in the 13th District to be more commuter-friendly. The upgraded line will create an efficient connection capable of getting passengers from west to east in 30 minutes every 15 minutes with connections to all five subway lines and the central train station.

The comprehensive management of the project and the ÖBB's representation on various city and district committees have lately been under the leadership of Thomas Schöfmann, who has replaced long-time project manager Peter Ullrich, who has recently retired.
