The total cost of the project is € 2.1 million. German Railways, DB, has begun work on the electrification of a 15 kV 1.5 km section of the line between Pfronten-Steinach and the Austrian border at Schönbichl.
The electrification will allow, starting with the time change on 12 December, the Austrian operator Ausserfernbahn, which is not connected to the rest of the Austrian rail network, to be electrically connected to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Munich. The last 14.4 km of the Austrian section of Ausserfernbahn from Reutte in Tyrol to Schönbichl were electrified in 2019.
The State of Bavaria, together with the German government, is financing this project, which has a budget of € 2.1 million and is part of the Bavarian government's action to achieve climate neutrality in local rail transport in 2040, for which they are working on the electrification of the network.
