The construction of the Rail Baltica bridge over the Neris River in the Jonava district has entered a significant new phase, with the contractor, Rizzani de Eccher, beginning the installation of sheet pilings at the end of last month.
This marks a crucial step in the development of the 1.51-kilometer bridge, the longest and one of the most complex infrastructure projects in Lithuania's history. The sheet pilings will create a temporary perimeter, ensuring the safe installation of the bridge pile heads, which will later be removed as construction progresses.

"The structure is notably complex," said Justas Vyžintas, LTG Infra Head for Rail Baltica Management. The bridge's design, developed by Spanish firm IDOM, presented significant challenges, particularly in minimizing environmental impact on the Neris River. "Rizzani de Eccher refined the plans for sheet pilling installations to ensure the foundation work could proceed safely and efficiently," Vyžintas added.
As of now, 262 out of the planned 376 piles have been installed, using 7.6 thousand cubic meters of concrete. The bridge's construction requires the use of three distinct technologies—moving scaffolding, the balance method, and formwork—due to its length and height of 40 meters. Vyžintas noted that despite the challenges, effective communication among the Rail Baltica team, designers, and contractors has led to technical solutions that are expected to accelerate visible progress by September.
