China Launches Solar-Powered System on Baoshen Railway

China has directly connected solar generation to the power network of the Baoshan Railway, a freight route serving the country’s northern coal region. The project could become a model for similar systems elsewhere in China.

Last autumn, China's energy giant CHN Energy announced the successful implementation of an innovative railway power supply system. The Baoshen Railway, which stretches from Baotou in Inner Mongolia to Shenmu in Shaanxi Province, is now powered by a Renewable Energy + Railway Power Supply system. According to the company, this is China's first railway project to integrate renewable energy directly into its power supply network.

Why Northwest China Is Well Suited for Solar Power

The Baoshen Railway is a vital transportation corridor serving the Shenfu-Dongsheng coal mining region, one of the largest coal-producing areas in China. The railway now operates using a combination of conventional grid electricity and solar photovoltaic power, allowing renewable energy to supplement the existing railway power network. 

According to CHN Energy, Northwest China is particularly well suited for solar power generation due to its dry climate, long hours of sunshine, and high levels of solar radiation. These natural conditions make the region an ideal location for large-scale photovoltaic projects, making the decision to harness solar energy both practical and efficient. 

"When the train is running, the electricity generated by the photovoltaic system is intelligently regulated before being fed into the railway power grid," China Shenhua Energy explains. This smart energy management system ensures that solar power can be efficiently integrated into the railway's daily operations.

The Railway Could Produce 7.4 Million kWh a Year

The project is expected to generate approximately 7.4 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually. According to the project's leader, Professor Gao Shibin, the initiative could make a significant contribution to achieving China's "dual carbon" goals. 

If successful, the model could be expanded across the Three Norths region, which includes Northeast, North, and Northwest China. In the future, similar renewable-powered railway systems could potentially be implemented in other parts of China and even inspire sustainable railway projects in other countries around the world.

China's recent investments in sustainable railway systems demonstrate a broader shift in the industry: railways are no longer viewed only as a means of transportation, but also as a strategic component of energy security, economic cooperation, and climate goals. As global demand for cleaner and more reliable transport solutions continues to grow, innovative railway projects could become an essential part of future infrastructure development.
